Morning Tonic

MOST PERFECT RAW CACAO MORNING TONIC

 

A few months ago, I gave up coffee completely.  I was having a lot of unexplained headaches and an acupuncturist told me to try giving it up.  So I did.  (I also started tracking my water intake, just by carrying a 32oz water bottle and making sure to drink at least 2 in a day)

I tried all of the coffee substitutes, didn't love them, and made up this raw cacao herbal tonic.  Cacao does have a little caffeine, but not much.  (A cup of this is equivalent to about 1/20th of the caffeine in a cup of coffee.)  Something about the raw cacao has a similarity to coffee - which makes sense in a way, they are both dark seeds from trees that grow in warm climates.  There is a thick richness to this that I have grown to love more than coffee, if that is possible to believe.  And it isn't at all acidic or dehydrating.  I love it so much and actually look forward to it the way I used to look forward to coffee.  (It probably helped that I had already given it up, detoxed off of caffeine and tried some other things when I starting making this.)

 Raw Cacao contains the alkaloid theobromine which has a mood-elevating effect.  It also contains serotonin, dopamine, monoamine oxidase, and a variety of flavonoids. These are thought to lower blood pressure, prevent migraine, and contribute to its mood-elevating effects.

RECIPE

2 REALLY HEAPING TBSP RAW CACAO

SPLASH OF COCONUT MILK

PINCH OF HIMALAYAN SALT

1/2 TSP HE SHOU WOU

1/2 TSP ASHWAGANDHA

2 SCOOPS VANILLA MUSHROOM POWDER

1/2 TBSP MACA ORGANIC HONEY TO TASTE 

DIRECTIONS

Boil Water Blend the Raw Cacao, Coconut Milk, Sea Salt, He Shou Wou, Ashwaghanda, Vanilla Mushroom Powder and Honey in the Blender for a few seconds with the top on Fill a mug 2/3 full with boiling water to add to the blender while the blender is on with the vent open (place a kitchen towel over the lid)  Blend for 10-15 seconds Yum chocolate frothy herbal deliciousness.    

(*WARNING : If you put the top on the blender while blending any hot liquids, the steam will have nowhere to go and will force the top off, causing an explosion of hot liquids.  Don't let this happen to you!   If you're making for more than one do in batches)

If you want to give up coffee for any reason, I highly recommend this.  Or great just as a tonic. Purchasing the herbs is an upfront cost, but they last a really long time.  You can also adjust which herbs you add to the cacao, depending on what you're into ❤️ Homemade cashew milk is also great in this! 

Giving up coffee can be really hard, but after the initial shock + caffeine withdrawal headaches, it is surprisingly easy to go without caffeine.  I went to a class on ayurvedic medicine recently, and the teacher mentioned that in the afternoon when you get super sleepy after lunch when you want to reach for an espresso, it is your body and organs needing a rest after eating,  (makes sense that most of the world traditionally took a siesta after lunch). Coffee actually shocks the system and prevents this needed rest.  Try having some herbal tea and lying down for ten minutes.  That is actually what your body is asking for!  It takes ten minutes to run to the coffeeshop anyway...
